PHIL Cubiss aims to spoil Walney Central’s promotion party when they go head to head with Hindpool Tigers in tomorrow’s North West Men’s League Division One clash at Brisbane Park.

Victory for the Cents will clinch second place and promotion to the Premier Division.

The Tigers, however, aim to take the bragging rights and gain revenge for a 32-22 defeat at Central Drive earlier in the season.

“With selection problems we will start as underdogs – and everyone loves an underdog,” said Hindpool coach Cubiss.

“It is a game we would love to win and spoil the party for Walney and it will be nice for both of us to see some action. With our team selection of late we are not in contention for a play-off place and the highest we could finish is fifth.

“We will go out and give it our best shot; you just want to win a local derby game and it should be a good contest. At their ground it was a very good game, but they got the win.”

Points machine Connor McDermott is doubtful with an ankle injury, while ruled out are key players Grant Burns, Matt Archer, Lee Boyd and Jamie Lynn.

While the Tigers are lacking those key players, there are no such worries for the Cents as Jamie Morrow, Adam Nicholson, George Nicholls, Jamie Ralph and Dale Waite are all back in contention in a near full-strength squad.

“This six week lay-off is no good for anyone and the lads are chomping at the bits to get on the pitch,” said Walney joint-coach Dave Warne, whose side were left kicking their heels last Saturday.

“We are all looking forward to playing, we have trained hard in the last few weeks and have just been frustrated without a game.

“If we fail then we have our last game at home next week with Leigh Miners A – if they come. If not, we get the points.”

Ulverston v Oldham St Annes

Victory for Phil Atkinson’s team will secure the NWML Division Two league title and cap a day at Dragley Beck where the club will honour Lauren Atkinson, the daughter of chairman Nigel who tragically lost her life in Manchester 18 months ago.

More than 100 special pink t-shirts have been sold and a large crowd is expected.

“It would be fantastic if we get the win and to celebrate promotion and Lauren’s life in the clubhouse later would cap a good day,” said Ulverston coach Atkinson.

“But it’s going to be a hard game as St Annes are still in the hunt for second place, along with Wigan St Cuthberts whom we travel to next week. It’s in our own hands.”

Scott Houston returns following a knee operation, along with Rowan Smedley, and skipper Matt Storey faces a late fitness test.
