STEVE Neale has vowed to take action after Barrow Raiders’ recent win over Rochdale Hornets was marred by allegations of racism towards one of the visiting players from the stands.

The incident was reported to the Raiders following the 17-10 win over the Hornets on August 10 at the start of the Betfred Championship Shield Super Eights, with chairman Neale admitting it could have been dealt with better at the time.

However, he was unequivocal that racism will not be tolerated at the club and steps will be taken to avoid a repeat, along with supporting any police inquiry.

“The club has received reports of a racist event at the Rochdale fixture,” said Neale. “Barrow RLFC do not condone the language that was alleged to have been directed towards a Rochdale player.

“Both Barrow RLFC and the RFL adopt a zero tolerance attitude to any form of discrimination. The club accept that they may not have handled the situation as best they could and our stewards were unsure of how to react as this was such a unique event, and we contacted the RFL for advice.

“We have received information about the RFL’s ‘Tackle It’ campaign and all the match day stewards will be educated as to how best to deal with future incidents. The club, players and supporters are such a diverse group and we pride ourselves on being an inclusive club.

“The club would like to appeal for witness statements to be sent to the club. Racism is a criminal act and the club intend to forward any evidence received to the police for them to handle.”

Meanwhile, the club have confirmed two new directorial appointments in Joe Slater and Andy Gaffney.

Slater takes on the role of stadium director and former director of rugby Gaffney taking an associate role on the playing side, assisting head coach Paul Crarey with recruitment.

“Hopefully we’ll be in a position to announce more people soon,” added Neale.
