THE Bay West Lancashire League season started on Saturday with only a couple of local sides managing to win and two more picking up draws.

Premier Division debutants Crooklands Casuals began with a home win against Burnley United, with all the goals packed into the last 20 minutes.

The visitors went ahead in the 70th minute, but Jonny Jones levelled and, with five minutes left, Glyn Caine headed Cassies in front.

In the final minute Burnley made it 2-2, but from the restart the evergreen Mike Park headed home a Craig May cross for the winner.

At Park Vale Vickerstown were held to a goalless draw by Euxton Villa.

In Division One, Millom went down 1-0 at home to Garstang who scored through former Lancaster City striker Leon Gierke.

A patched up Dalton United side lost 2-0 at Turton, while Martin Amison was on target for Hawcoat Park as they were beaten 5-1 at one of the sides who will be in the promotion hunt, Norcross & Warbreck.

Mike Kewley had an instant impact in his competitive debut for Furness Rovers by scoring in their 1-1 draw at Mill Hill St Peters.

Ambleside United surprisingly went down 3-2 at Wyre Villa with many people expecting them to be challenging for promotion again after coming up as Division Two champions.

In Division Two, new boys Barrow Wanderers were the other local side to win as they twice came from behind to beat Kendal County 5-2 at Lesh Lane.

Kendal went ahead but Andrew Forristall equalised, however the visitors were 2-1 up at half-time.

Wanderers dominated the second half with Nathan Cloudsdale making at 2-2 with a 30-yard screamer before headers from Forristall and Kyle McCormick put Brian White’s side in control. The win was rounded off by a solo goal from Sean Darby.

Walney Island were 2-0 up through Jon McKinley and Chris Newsham but had to settle for a point from a tense 2-2 draw at Tummerhill against Milnthorpe Corinthians.

Kevin Edwards scored for Askam United at Bolton County, but two defensive errors meant that the home side won 2-1.

Furness Cavaliers made a dreadful start at new boys Hurst Green, going behind after 90 seconds but responded with a superb free-kick by Steve Morgan.

The home side led 2-1 at the break and went 3-1 up early in the second half. Morgan scored again, this time from the penalty spot before former Longridge striker Alan Coar completed his hat-trick to condemn Cavaliers to a 4-2 defeat.

There are several local derbies taking place on Tuesday night.

In the Premier Division Vickerstown entertain Crooklands Casuals, in Division One Hawcoat Park visit Furness Rovers and Ambleside United make the trip to Millom.

In Division Two, at Duddon Road, Askam United play Furness Cavaliers. All these games are 6.45pm kick-offs.

Holker Old Boys are away to AFC Darwen on Tuesday in the North West Counties Division One (7.45pm kick-off) and will be looking to put Saturday’s 7-0 home defeat by Abbey Hey behind them.
