The Ulverston Summer 10k race

MORE than 150 runners followed in the footsteps of double Olympic champion Mo Farah and raced over 10,000m.
And while competitors in Ulverston’s summer 10k – hosted by local club GSK Hoad Hill Harriers – were, of course, well off Farah’s London 2012 winning time of 27 minutes and 30 seconds, there were some excellent performances.
First to splash his way through the puddles at the finish line was Tom Cornthwaite, of Salford Harriers.
The 27-year-old clocked a winning time of 33:15 to finish 24 seconds ahead of runner-up Steve Hebblethwaite, of Keswick AC.
Barrow and Furness Striders runner Jed Bartlett was just 14 seconds further adrift in third place.
A total of 159 athletes completed the course, which made its way out from Glaxo Sports Club to Conishead Priory and back via the Coast Road.
Keswick won the men’s team prize, with Striders taking second place.
First to cross the finish line for the host club was Chris Howie, who was placed 17th in a time of 38:29, ahead of ever-improving team-mate Gordon Bayliffe, who was 21st in 38:55.
Howie was also the second veteran over-40 to complete the course, behind Simon Stanway, of Striders, who was 10th overall in 37:12.
Hoad Hill’s Denis Metcalfe claimed the veteran over-60s prize in 41:41, but star of the show was evergreen Striders runner Peter Hall, who ran a superb 41:14 to finish 34th overall and first veteran over-70.
Barrow Amateur Boxing Club were also out in force, with newly-turned professional Liam Conroy 21st in 38:54, coach Jeff Moses 25th in 39:18 and Reece Frankland 32nd in 41:01 their first three runners home.
International fell runner Melanie Hyder, of Kendal-based club Helm Hill Runners, stormed to victory in the ladies’ race, clocking a time of 38:32 to finish in 18th place overall.
Hoad Hill’s Sharon Dixon took second place in 42:29, just over half-a-minute ahead of Jayne Perry, of Lancaster and Morecambe AC.
Dixon was backed up by club-mates Karen McKinnon (47:31) and Joanne McCleod (48:13) to ensure Hoad Hill retained the women’s team prize.
Pamela Leverton, from the host club, was second veteran over-65, behind Valerie Harrold, of Bentham Beagles.
Another local club, Black Combe Runners, fielded eight athletes, with Peter Kay 56th in 44:23, James Goffe 57th in 44:30 and Peter Grayson 65th in 45:51 their top three finishers.
Other selected local club finishers: 6 David Scimshaw (Allithwaite RC) 36:31, 28 Gavin Lloyd (Broughton Runners) 40:09, 30 Andy Jackson (Hoad Hill) 40:43, 31 Michael Jones (Hoad Hill) 40:51, 35 Ross Cooksey (Barrow Boxing) 41:18, 37 Robert Grant (Striders) 41:40, 41 Kevin Robinson (Barrow Boxing) 42:18, 43 Tom Southward (Hoad Hill) 42:47, 45 Gary Dover (Hoad Hill) 42:47, 48 Paul O’Reilly (Barrow Boxing) 43:03, 50 Daryl Cartmill (Barrow Boxing) 43:15, 58 Steven Eilbeck (Barrow Boxing) 44:45, 70 Colin Benn (Black Combe) 46:34, 72 Rueben Allonby (Black Combe) 46:47, 74 Phil Horrocks (Hoad Hill) 46:59, 76 Dean Edmonds (Barrow Boxing) 47:03, 90 Phil Newton (Black Combe) 48:25, 92 Ken Lamb (Hoad Hill) 48:48, 95 Rob Collins (Black Combe) 49:10, 100 David Spencer (Striders) 50:28, 101 Rob McKeever (Black Combe) 50:39, 108 Lee Cassidy (Hoad Hill) 51:57, 115 Mike Fawcett (Hoad Hill) 53:14, 123 Karl Fursey (Black Combe) 54:43, 132 Leanne Bayliffe (Hoad Hill) 56:18, 142 Alan Mitchell (Hoad Hill) 59:18.
