Windermere 0 Furness 52

FURNESS enjoyed a happy Easter trip to Lake District with a points rampage against an out-of-sorts Windermere.

The visitors were soon into their stride in this Cumbria League clash when good work by man-of-the-match Adam Nicholson and Ethan Guy resulted in a try for winger Jordan Ashton.

Windermere started to get into the game with Furness struggling to cope with the big home forwards, particularly in the set-piece.

It came somewhat against the run of play therefore, when Nicholson put Rhys Studt over under the sticks a few minutes later. A simple conversion from Guy gave Furness made it 12-0.

Windermere weren't giving up however, and it was only resolute Furness defending that prevented them going over after a sustained period of pressure yards from the visitors' line.

The pattern of the game had by now been established, with the large Windermere forwards looking to rely on brute force to get over the line while Furness opted for guile and speed.

This was the case when Nicholson masterminded the next Furness effort when breaking from his own 22, which resulted in Joe Mallinson going in under the posts.

After the interval Furness were soon on the board again when prop Dries Venter went on a 50-metre run. This resulted in a hasty clearance being charged down and bounced nicely into the hands of Furness winger Sam Attard who went under the sticks for Furness's fourth and bonus point try of the day.

Although 26 points in arrears, Windermere weren't giving up and another period of pressure saw them narrowly fail to score, with only some excellent defensive play keeping them out.

Furness were proving very adept in turning defence into attack and in another move emanating from their own 22, captain Corne Els was there to apply the finishing touch with another try under the posts. Guy's conversion made it 33-0.

Venter was next to cross for a well deserved try converted by Guy, and this was followed by a superb length-of-the-field effort, scored by Alex Brown.

With full-time approaching and with some very tired looking Windermere bodies on the pitch, it was no surprise to see Furness round off a very successful afternoon with an eighth and final try. Els scored it and also managed to squeeze over the conversion.

Furness finish the season with three home games, starting with the visit of Workington this Saturday.
