THE young bowling aces of Furness had mixed fortunes in their opening David Kay-sponsored Federation of Crown Green Bowls Junior league match.
Facing reigning champions Leeds in their Division One match, the Furness Crown Green Bowling Association team only managed one win - despite several promising displays.
Ethan Lowden was the sole victor. However, Furness completely reversed the score against the Leeds A team, with Sam Naylor and Ethan Lowden enjoying outstanding results.
Fraser Rigg and Jack Last had single-figure wins as the South Cumbrians beat last year's Division two champions Heavy Woollen 7-3 to cement a second-place finish.
With several key players missing for Furness the remaining players deserve credit for winning two of their three matches.
Furness A, playing in Division Three, whitewashed Ormskirk A
10-0 in their opening fixture. Like last year though they lost 8-2 to East Lancashire in their next match.
In the four-player matches, Furness beat Ormskirk A 3-2 but lost 4-1 to their bogey team East Lancashie.
The junior league is designmed for players 16 and under and the Furness A team has an average age of just 11 ½ so it bodes well for the future.
Josh Smith won three games, and Kaitlin Last, Harry Preston, Jack Preston and Daniel Thompson won twice, while eight-year-old Reuben MacPake and ten-year-old Amelia Massey Holmes won once.
