YOUNG tennis aces served up a feast of sporting fun at Barrow's Hoops centre.

Teams from the Furness Academy and Catholic and Walney Clusters fought it out in the A-team finals in a bid to win through to the Furness finals.

Yarlside, St James, St. George’s, Barrow Island and Dane Ghyll were represented in the Furness Cluster event, while Chetwynde, Holy Family, South Walney Juniors and Vickerstown played in the Catholic and Walney cluster competition.

Barrow Island won the Furness cluster and progress to the Furness final along with Yarlside and St James, with the two Chetwynde teams both making it through from the Catholic and Walney cluster tournament.

Mini red tennis sees matches played on small courts, with teams of two boys and two girls representing each school.

The players are ranked first and second within their teams and they play their respective opponents from each of the other schools on a round-robin basis.

Games are played on a first-to-seven-points basis, with pupils using smaller rackets and sponge balls, and choosing between over-arm and under-arm serves.

Furness school games organiser Oliver Carswell praised the standards of play on show at Hoops and said “The competition went really well with lots of close matches.”
