THREE brothers are celebrating becoming North West All Area Judo champions after racking up medal success after medal success.

Lewis, Kavan and Harvey Burns, who all compete for Furness Judo Club, shone in the Lancashire Open, Merseyside Open and Greater Manchester Open.

The trio each claimed medals at all three events – including a treble gold for Harvey – as they battled it out for the first-ever North West championship.

The judokas collected points at each event based on their displays, with their individual efforts combined to decide the overall team champions.

Points were gained by how they won a fight and also on whether or not they claimed a medal.

At the Cheshire and Manchester Open, held at Wilmslow, Lewis and Kavan stepped up in weight, with Lewis moving to under-30kg and Kavan to under-50kg.

The strategy clearly worked, as Kavan collected a bronze medal and Lewis earned a gold. Harvey, who was competing at under-55kg, also won gold on a successful day all-round for Furness.

At Merseyside Open, in Liverpool, Harvey impressed once more by winning his second gold of the series, while Lewis and Kavan both took bronze medals to keep up the great start and the momentum that had picked up in Wilmslow.

The finale was the Lancashire Open, held in Blackburn, where Harvey made it three triumphs from three with another gold medal.

Lewis and Kavan went one better than in Liverpool with a silver medal each, with the results across the events seeing them crowned as team champions.

Harvey, however, was not finished with his season yet.

He went on to fight in the Northern Ireland Open, where he finished seventh, and then at the Scottish Cadet Open, where he once again finished seventh – though with national training having been on the same day, the result was better than it appeared.

Harvey had to turn down an opportunity to compete for the England Judo team in the Spanish Cup and the Bremen Cup, in Germany, to concentrate on his GCSE exams, but he and his brothers are now champing at the bit to get back into training.

Through their successes from the season, all three have been automatically selected for the North West Area Junior Squad for 2018/2019, where they will train at selected North West venues throughout the year.
