JACK Preston and debutant Michael Wilson went unbeaten to help the Furness Crown Green Bowling Association Junior A team top the David Kay Federation of Crown Green Bowls Division Three.

Playing their final matches at Leyland, Furness A started the day six points behind leaders East Lancashire, but they began with a 7-3 win over Ormskirk A, who in turn drew 5-5 with the leaders.

Having only taken three of 15 points on offer against East Lancashire in the first round of matches in May, Furness went on to defeat them 7-3 in the eight-man format and 5-0 in the four-man match.

That was followed by by a 4-1 win over Ormskirk again, turning a six-point deficit into a six-point winning margin.

Along with Preston and Wilson winning all three games, Kaitlin Last, Reuben MacPake, Harry Preston, Josh Smith and Daniel Thompson claimed two victories each.

Another newcomer to the sport, Isaac Sainty, managed to go home with a win from his final game.

Preston was the overall A-team merit winner as well, losing just one of six games played.

The Furness junior team in Division One had to settle for the runners-up spot behind reigning champions Leeds by 16 points, finishing 14 clear of third-placed Heavy Woollen.

Facing Leeds in the opening match, Furness could only manage two winners before stern words of encouragement resulted in them going on to beat Leeds A 9-1 and Heavy Woollen 8-2.

Ethan Lowden bowled the fast tricky green well to take all three of his games. Shawn Fisher, Jack Last, Sam Naylor, Callum Sharples and Ryan Smith each had two successes, while Jack Brannon and Fraser Rigg had a win each.

Naylor, Lowden, Last and Fisher all claimed four out of six games overall, but Naylor finished top of his side's merit standings by virtue of a better aggregate.
