KING Alfred emerged victorious in their top-of-the-table clash with Police in Sharples Lettings Furness and District Bowling League Division One.

A 10-4 win means the Alfred now have an eight-point lead in first place.

Police, minus three regular players and long-term absentee Kevin Toal, tried to redress the situation by drafting in Cumbria county players David Brown and Tom Dennison, but the pair could only muster 20 points between them.

That was down mainly to an exhilarating 21-5 performance from Ian McDonald for the Alfred, accompanied by scores of 21-8 by Tony Whitehouse and 21-9 from the brilliant Danny Edmonds.

Unbeaten BIG Smash leader Paul Curwen continued his sensational form, posting a 21-5 reply for the Bobbies.

Top performances of 21-3 from Richard Wearing and 21-9 by Ian Clough helped Askam move second after beating Post Office 8-6 at Sandy Lane.

After taking their opening three matches, it is now one win in eight for Dalton CC, who lost heavily at home to Red River, 12-3. River's best were Darren Woodend, 21-7, and John Millar, 21-8.

Conversely, after failing to win any of their opening five fixtures, Salthouse made it five from six by beating Walney Park 10-4. The Islanders' Billy Harding was the game's top-scorer, triumphing 21-8.

In Division Two, North Scale’s hopes of adding to last week’s first success were dashed by Hawcoat Park B, 11-3, moving the club side above Police A. Ian France carded a fine 21-9 score for the hosts.

Barrow Island having found wins hard to come by this year, and will be thrilled by their best display of the season, 9-5 over fourth-placed Kirkby A. The Villagers' Ivor Broome did have the bragging rights of the game’s best score, 21-8.

Only collecting 13 points from their last four matches has dropped Police A into the relegation zone. Dave Bell, 21-6, and Bob Mantle, 21-8, helped Dalton CC A beat them 10-5, despite 21-8 replies from Nigel Burns and Dave Little.

Young Luke Worsley triumphed 21-4 as leaders Glaxo SC defeated Salthouse A 11-3, while second-placed Hawcoat Park A also scooped 11 points at King Alfred B.

Mike Proctor, 21-4, Geoff Maudsley, 21-5, and Wilf Heywood, 21-9, were in form for Hawcoat, while Cec Turnbull, 21-3, and Peter Roberts, 21-9, played well for King Alfred.

Co-op SC A sit third, 15 points adrift of a promotion spot, following a 11-4 win at Roose Community A. Paul McHugh, 21-2, and Dave Phizacklea, 21-8, top-scored for the Dane Avenue side, with Norman Whitehouse carding a 21-8 reply.

Despite John Hamilton’s 21-9 score, Askam A failed to take the aggregate by four chalks at West Shore after the games had been shared.

Only 3 matches were played in Division Three, with Co-op SC B stealing the limelight, beating title contenders West Mount A 11-3. Barry Gill, 21-7, and Gerry McDonald, 21-9, were the victors' leading bowlers.

With wins of 21-1 from Richard Park, 21-6 from Alan Stevenson and 21-8 by Ian Parkinson and Malcolm Cleasby, Kirkby had little trouble beating Barrow Island A 12-2 at the Community Centre.

Salthouse B lost 7-5 on games at home to West Mount, but wins of 21-4 from Keith Thompson and 21-9 by Eric Salton helped them clinch the aggregate points by a single chalk and in a drawn match.
