LOWLY Barrow Island pulled off a shock in Sharples Lettings Furness and District Bowling League Division Two, returning to the Island with a 7-7 draw at Hawcoat Park A.

Despite not having the services of top man Dave Leece, the visitors managed to win seven games, but lost the aggregate by 21 chalks as Jim Bawden, 21-3, Jack Curphey, 21-6, and Ron Woods, 21-7, triumphed for the home side.

Steve Hunter did lower the colours of merit leader David Hird, something that has only happened three times this season.

Derek Bell, 21-4, and Geoff Hill, 21-7, helped Glaxo SC beat Hawcoat Park B 12-2 to extend the works side's lead at the top to nine points.

Ian Thompson prevented a dry rub as North Scale lost 13-1 at third-placed Co-op SC A, who had Stuart Urmston, 21-2, John Proudfoot, 21-5, and Paul McHugh, 21-6, in form.

Peter Tyson, 21-2, and Roy Bainbridge, 21-3, led the way as Kirkby A defeated Askam A 9-5, with John Lindsay carding a 21-7 reply in a scoreline the visitors would have been happy with.

In a match that returned nine single-figure cards, West Shore won 11-4 at Roose Community A. Jordan McNamee, 21-1, and Phil Dixon, 21-4, were best for the hosts, with Brian Chelton, 21-3, scoring the biggest margin of six scores under 10 for the victors.

Despite having only three winners at King Alfred B, Police A are now seven points above bottom spot. Peter Roberts, 21-2, Keith Sewell, 21-7, and Keith Johnson, 21-8, were on form for the Alfred, with skipper Nigel Burns triumphing 21-9 for the Bobbies.

Salthouse A won 7-5 on games but lost the match 8-7 to Dalton CC A, losing the aggregate by a single chalk due to a fine 21-8 success from Harry Dagger.

Merit leader Barry Lowden had a superb 21-8 victory as Division One leaders King Alfred enhanced their chances of lifting the title by beating reigning champions Hawcoat Park 10-4.

Nearest challengers Police are now seven points behind, after surprisingly losing five games to Walney Park on the Red River. Matt Clegg excelled for Police, winning 21-4, while Keith Dixon was the visitors' best.

Lindal produced their best performance of the season, winning 12-3 at Red River and taking the aggregate by a massive 84 chalks, mainly due to wins of 21-3 from Mark Dickinson, 21-5 from Ian France and 21-6 from Paul Rooney.

After victories in each of their last eight matches, Co-op Sports Club’s fine run came to an end at Askam, who have lost only once this season at Sandy Lane. Richard Wearing, 21-4, and Colin Taylor, 21-7, for Askam, along with 21-9 wins for Matthew Ryder and Paul Clark for Co-op took the plaudits.

Neil Jones carded a 21-9 score to help Dalton Cricket Club’s recent revival continue with a fine 11-3 success against Salthouse, whose best reply came from Adam Miller, 21-8.

Post Office’s recent run of losing, winning, losing, winning, continued with an 11-3 win over neighbours King Alfred A. The heavy green suiting Mike Fieldhouse, who triumphed 21-3, Alf Oldfield, 21-7, and Jono Kells, 21-8.

Walney Park A moved back to the summit of Division Three after hammering their B-team 14-1.

Ian Worthington, 21-4, and Ron Repton, 21-5, were the leaders' best, with Billy Dodding preventing the whitewash by the narrowest of margins.

Barrow Island A had a fine 9-5 margin against second-placed West Mount A, then repeated the feat against Hawcoat Park C. Kian Goude won 21-9 against Mount and, against Park, Dave Dent triumphed 21-7 and Neil McMillan 21-9.

Red River A are 12 points off the lead with a game in hand, after great successes of 12-2 against Roose Community B and 12-3 at Salthouse B.

Paul Ryan, 21-4, was best against Roose, while Richard Hall led the way 21-7 at Raglan Street.

Kirkby are still in with a shout of finishing top after a 13-2 success at Hawcoat Park C, with Roger Tyson, 21-5, and Stephen Hurst, 21-6, their men in form.

Roose Community B made amends for their loss at the River by gaining a second win of the campaign, 9-5 over Co-op SC B. Big scores of 21-8 by Jack Huitson, and 21-9 from Steve Pryer and Peter Jeffries were to no avail as the Dane Avenue side lost the aggregate by five chalks. Daniel Graham’s 21-7 helped for Roose.

John Shipley won 21-6 as West Shore A beat Glaxo SC A 9-5, while Barry Morrow recorded a 21-4 scoreline and Steve Hocknell 21-6 as West Mount comfortably disposed of Walney Park B 11-3. John Howard and Leo Clarke were 21-6 victors for the visitors.
