BARROW Amateur Boxing Club fighters were treated to a masterclass when world heavyweight title contender Hughie Fury got in the ring with them.

Fury is warming up for his WBO World Heavyweight showdown with Joseph Parker in Manchester in September with a training camp in Lake District.

And thanks to South Cumbria-based international referee Alvin Finch’s connections with the Bolton-based Team Fury, they agreed to visit the refurbished Brook Street gym for a workout.

Fury sparred a few rounds with Barrow ABC fighters Jim Braithwaite, Andy Rawlinson and Jordan Dix, under the watchful eye of Hughie’s dad and trainer Peter, plus Finch and Barrow ABC head coach Jeff Moses.

Also in action were fellow professionals Peter McDonagh and Savannah Marshall. Irishman McDonagh – a veteran of 57 pro fights – sparred with Ethan Doyle, Josh Jones and Dix.

Two-time Olympian and former world amateur champion Marshall is training with the Team Fury camp before heading to the US ahead of her professional debut in Las Vegas next month on the under card of the Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor contest.

Marshall, who is signed up with Mayweather’s stable, sparred with Tia Davies, Jones and Doyle.

Everyone present felt the sparring session was a worthwhile exercise, with plans for more joint work-outs in the near future.

“It’s a pleasure to come here,” said Hughie Fury afterwards: “I love this gym and we got a lovely welcome, so thank-you very much to everyone.”.
