ADAM Chapman is gearing up for the Faldo Series Grand Final next month after scoring victory in a tournament at East Sussex National.

The Windermere golfer won by two shots from the Netherlands’ Bas Vermeulen after rounds of 68, 71 and 73 – including five birdies over the first seven holes of the competition.

England squad member Chapman felt his first-round performance laid the foundation for his success and is delighted to be heading to the series’ climax.

“Playing at East Sussex National was great fun,” said Chapman, who is currently playing his golf at Carus Green, Kendal.

“Following the first round, I put myself into position to win and from that point on, it was mine to lose.

“I played really well all week; the weather was extremely hot which I like, so I’m looking forward to the Grand Final in Suffolk in October.”

Chapman followed up that display by shooting a course-record 59 around Windermere in a medal competition, with his bogey-free round including six birdies, one eagle and 11 pars.

“It’s been a long time coming at Windermere as I’ve now shot lower than 60, 16 times now; this was the first 59 in a competitive round,” said Chapman, whose father Peter is the only other amateur to break 60 in a competition on the course.

Chapman is also working towards gaining a tour card and defending the North of England amateur strokeplay title he has won for the past two years.
