WALNEY Terriers will aim to get back to winning ways on Sunday when they take on Knottingley Raiders at Ulverston’s GSK Sports Club (2pm kick-off).

The Terriers started their BAFA campaign with a 27-14 victory at newcomers Knottingley Raiders, but that was followed by a home defeat to Morecambe Bay Storm.

A fumble recovery from the visitors denied Terriers the chance to make it back-to-back wins as they went down 22-20.

The two sides had already faced each other in a two-game friendly series last year, which saw Terriers rack up 50 points across both matches and emerge victorious each time.

However, the teams went into this contest at Glaxo Sports Club both having won their first matches of the season, and it was the home side who began the brighter.

Terriers found their running game stifled by Storm’s defence early on and then saw quarterback Joe Allington throw an interception.

However, Storm were unable to capitalise and when they were flagged for pass interference it allowed Allington to score from a two-yard run.

Terriers’ defence then came to the fore, but an excellent punt pinned the hosts on their three-yard line, from which Morecambe Bay forced a safety after tackling the ball carrier in his own end zone.

A missed field goal attempt followed for the home side, and Storm took the lead on the next drive following a 50-yard pass play and a two-point conversion following the touchdown.

But a penalty against the Morecambe Bay defence set up Allington to find Gareth Thomas from five yards for the touchdown, before the quarterback hit Brad Pearce for the two-point conversion to put Walney 14-12 up at half-time.

The third quarter saw Terriers struggle to get their attack moving on either the ground or in the air, while another 50-yard pass through good defensive coverage led to a touchdown for Storm, which saw them retake the lead.

Defensive back Matthew Plant came up with an interception from Storm quarterback Chris Mayne though and that allowed the hosts to set up a play which saw Chris Pedley sprint away to the end zone.

But Morecambe Bay hit back with another touchdown to move two points ahead with five minutes left on the clock and when Terriers turned over the ball on the opposition’s 40-yard line it saw Storm punt to pin Walney back on their own 10-yard line with 55 seconds left.

It proved impossible for the home side to go the distance for the game-clinching score and they now look to this Sunday’s home game against Knottingley to get back to winning ways.
