BARROW ABC fighters have had a busy few weeks on the road putting their bodies on the line in the black and gold club colours.

Tia Davies produced a typically gutsy performance in Carlisle to win a rematch against C Whitaker of Moss Side, Manchester, an opponent she had also defeated in the North West finals in the autumn.

Josh Jones’ arm was also raised on the night as he recovered well after suffering a few early blows to get the nod against L Parsons of Windermere BC.

Jonno Robertson saw his chances of gaining revenge for a recent defeat to Russian opponent Vibatou ended when the Brook Street man suffered a cut eye in the second round which ended the contest. Robertson had first fought the Windermere BC man in Preston.

Matt Currie was also in action in Preston as he took on A Hussain (Longsight BC) in an energetic, toe-to-toe bout, but he lost a split decision.

There was victory for big James Braithwaite though as he earned a second-round stoppage against Penrith Elite’s L Monroe, after forcing a standing count in the opening stages.

Jordan Dix stepped up at short notice to perform at the Leigh ABC show, and he boxed superbly despite losing a split decision verdict to British Army man S Horsfield.

Dix will be back in the ring at Stockport on Saturday April 1.

Appearing on the same bill at Leigh was Joe Skyrme, who Barrow ABC head coach Jeff Moses felt was very unlucky not to get the nod after a great display against another British Army man in D Reynolds.

“He got beat on a split and even the other lad said he should have won it,” said Moses.

“But it was a great night, we met the Smith brothers (the famous Liverpool quartet Callum, Liam, Stephen and Paul) and got our photo taken with all their world title belts.”

Elsewhere, youngster Connor Braithwaite – the son of Jim – shrugged off illness to get through the ropes at the Penrith Elite show and put in a brave display in defeat to L Watson of the host club.

“Connor didn’t feel too good on the way up and you could see he was weak during the bout and got beat,” said Moses. “As soon as he came out of the ring he was sick.

"He didn’t even get his trophy. He didn’t feel well at all but he still got in, so he is a credit in not letting the gym or himself down. He could have pulled out no problem, but he didn’t.”

Also on that bill Swarthmoor man Andy Rawlinson lost out to a split decision.

“We’ve been out quite a bit of over the last five weeks," added Moses. "We’ve won some and lost some but the main thing is we’re still turning out week after week, win or lose.”
