SPORTING heroes young and old will be honoured at tonight's Mail's 2017 South Cumbria Sports Awards.

Hawcoat Park in Barrow, hosts the inaugural event, which will see prizes handed out for outstanding individual and team achievements over the last 12 months (7.30pm start).

The shortlisted candidates for the four main categories are:

Junior Sportsperson: Aimee Everett (football) Harvey Burns (Judo) and Curtis Anderson (football).

Junior Team: Ulverston Victoria High School (Orienteering) Dalton U16s (Rugby League) and Ulverston Victoria High School (Table Cricket).

Senior Sportsperson: Charlotte Jones (Horse Racing) Liam Conroy (Boxing) and Liam Livingstone (Cricket).

Senior Team: Black Combe Runners Ladies (Fell Running) Barrow Raiders (Rugby League) and Croftlands Park (Football).

In addition, several dedicated people will be rewarded for the efforts with Service to Sport Awards.

These are: Joe Gardner and Dennis Boyd (Football) Garry Kelly and Paul Roskell (Rugby League) Terry Burns and John Horne (Rugby Union) Terry Atkinson (Cricket) and Ian and Lyn Fraser (Gymnastics).

Special guest at the event is former Barrow AFC and Birmingham City winger Neil Doherty.
