PERSEVERANCE paid off for Barrow and Furness Striders runner Ross Campbell, as he triumphed in the Christmas Pudding 10k.

Campbell finished second in the annual Glaxo Hoad Hill Harriers’ event in 2015 and 2016, but managed to go one one better to win in a time of 33 minutes, 16 seconds.

The Striders ace came home ahead of runner-up of James Buis, of Border Harriers, who was second in 34:11, with Keswick AC’s Russell Maddams third in 34:19.

Glorious sunny conditions attacted an entry of 302 runners – more than 30 of them 10k first-timers, including a group of 12 from the Millom Parkrun – as competitors set off from Glaxo Sports Club and weaved their way through the streets of South Ulverston and up to Conishead Priory, before retracing their steps.

Fourth place went to Leven Valley’s Ryan Everett, in 34:30, with Black Combe Runners pair Harvey Lord and Josh Hartley in fifth and sixth positions, and Campbell’s Striders team-mate Richard Walker eighth in 35:54.

First home for the host club was Jeff Chadwick, 14th across the finishing line in 37:42.

Leading lady was Nadia Shaw, from Cumberland AC, who came home in a time of 39:46 (26th overall).

Shaw was followed by first Hoad Hill lady Amy Whelan (33rd overall) in 40:33, with club-mate Sharon Dixon third (36th overall) in 40:46.

The men’s team prize went to the Striders’ top trio of Campbell, Walker and Ian Sadler, while the Harriers team of Whelan, Dixon and Darina Delonova took the ladies’ team award.
