A DEFEAT for Barrow Infernos could not dampen the spirits as Furness Roller Derby celebrated the success of their first home bout at Chetwynde School.

The club's men's side took to the track against Manchester side New Wheeled Order, who are rated as the fifth-best team in the world, in the school's sports hall, after having to host fixtures outside of the area in recent years.

A crowd including MP for Barrow and Furness John Woodcock, Barrow Council deputy leader Brendan Sweeney and Ulverston town mayor Paul Smith saw the Infernos do battle with their opponents, along with Newcastle Tyne and Fear and Birmingham's Crash Test Brummies going head-to-head.

Unfortunately, Barrow were beaten 399-81 by the Manchester outfit, but that did not detract too much from a memorable day for the club.

“It was an absolutely brilliant atmosphere and I was really proud of all of the people at Furness Roller Derby who made it happen,” said Furness Roller Derby club member Charlotte Smith.

“Everybody from the league pitched in in different ways and made it happen, and it was an absolutely amazing day.

“We were really pleased with the level of support we got and the atmosphere in the hall was absolutely amazing.”

The club's women's team, Furness Firecrackers, are hoping to hold a home bout at Chetwynde School next month as well, although the date for that is still to be confirmed.
