JAMES Moffatt is heading to Scotland with a trio of raiders looking for success tomorrow.

The Cartmel handler, whose first and only runner of the year so far came when Morning Royalty finished fourth over hurdles at Wetherby last weekend, sends Captain Brown, Amuse Me and Smart Ruler to Musselburgh.

It is likely to be a last run for the yard for Amuse Me, before he is sent to the sales next week after three years in the South Cumbrian yard.

The 12-year-old won his first three races for Moffatt, but has since been on the wrong side of the handicapper, and Moffatt said: “Amuse Me has been a wonderful servant, but he is probably going to Doncaster Sales next week, so it will be his last run for us. He will be running over three miles, then he will make someone a brilliant point-to-pointer.”

Captain Brown goes in the near-two-mile handicap hurdle on the back of a four-month spell off the track.

His last race was when coming last of five over a similar distance at Kelso in September on the back of a long season where he twice finished second, including once behind Barrow jockey Charlotte Jones on board Lough Kent at Cartmel.

The 10-year-old ran twice at Musselburgh last season with no success, though Moffatt is looking forward to seeing him back in action.

“Captain Brown starts again for his campaign after he has had a little bit of a break,” said the Pit Farm Stables trainer. “We're happy with him, he looks really well. We're looking forward to Captain Brown running.”

The third of Moffatt's trio, Smart Ruler, goes in the two-mile three-furling handicap hurdle, looking for a first win since he triumphed at the Edinburgh track in November 2016.

That was over course and distance, and Moffatt is hopeful there can be a repeat performance.

“The track and the ground will suit Smart Ruler, but he might just be better for the race,” he said.
