BLACK Combe Runners prepared for their summer break with a flurry of activity on the fells.

Harvey Lord impressed when taking 13th spot at the Kentmere Horseshoe race, starting near Staveley.

The race has 3,300ft of climbing to negotiate, and Lord did it well to pip pip Dark Peak AC's Peter Davis in what was a head-to-head battle among the 344-strong field, beating his foe by six seconds.

Some of the higher parts of the course were fogbound, causing a headache or two, but not for leaders Joshua Jardine (Helm Hill Runners) and Peter Bray (Chorlton Runners).

Jardine took the honours to clock 1:32.57, almost 50 seconds ahead of Bray.

The women's race was a clearer affair, and Julie Briscoe (Dark Peak) came home first in 1:53.35.

Among the BCR entrants, Lord was backed up by a good run from Nick Sebley (2:12.36), with Lynn Murray was pleased with her 2:34.50 clocking and Jonathan Bailey home in 2:44.05.

At the Reston Scar Scamper race, also near Staveley. Runners tackled 3.7 miles and just shy of 1,000ft of ascent in good, if a bit wet, conditions.

Jardine again took the win, just outside the course record in 29:08, but was pushed by Ambleside AC's Garry Greenhow, who arrived only 15 seconds in arrears.

Hannah Russell took the ladies win in 34:58, with her Helm Hill club-mate Catherine Slater not far behind, clocking 36:12.

First BCR to return was Mike Jewell, in 41:54, with Chris Roberts clocking 44:19. Also doing well was Andy Gittins, home in 51:27.

Roberts was the only Black Combe member to travel to North Yorkshire and for the Ingleborough Fell Race.

He got round the 6.8 mile, 1,968ft ascent course in 77:04. The race was won by Joe Baxter, of Pudsey and Bramley, in in 49:16.

Roberts was also the only BCR in the Sedbergh Sports senior fell race over 3.5 miles and 1,312ft of climbing.

He clocked a good 37:34 and picked up the MV60 prize in the process. Joshua Boyle, of Ribble Valley AC, won in 25:37.

The next BCR club championships counter is the Ulverston summer 10k, from the Glaxo, tonight, and then on Sunday it is the Hoad Hill Half-Marathon, from Ford Park.
