ROB Jebb produced a fell-running masterclass to claim victory in the senior fell race at the Lakeland Country fair in Torver.

On a new route up Coniston Old Man, with the fair moved into the field at Little Arrow, Jebb set the pace over a course 2km shorter than previously and without the road section.

The Helm Hill runner laid down a marker with the new course record of 46 minutes 19s second, some four-and-a-half minutes quicker that the rest of the field.

Jack Wright (Ambleside) was second in 50.41, followed closely by another Helm Hill man, Lee Procter, 16 seconds later.

There were some good showings from Black Combe Runners in the race as well, with Tim Ripper sixth, Matthew Rooke ninth, Gavin Lloyd 15th – and first under-23s – Peter Tayler 20th and Will Ross 34th.

Eleventh-placed Hannah Horsburgh, of Keswick, was first woman home in 57.07.

In the junior races, Millom Emily Swarbrick followed her successes a day earlier at Rusland Sports with victory in the under-14s girls race.

There was also another triumph for the Jebb family, as Millie was first home in the under-11s girls event.

The organisers thanked marshals Katie Dawson, Heather Troughton, Janette and Mark Braithwaite and Jackie Coe, and summit marshals Britta Sendlhofer and Keith Montgomery, as well as Sam Clarke for loan of equipment and David Sharp for maps.

Away from the running events, the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling saw Thomas Brocklebank take the Natwest Bank Shield as the all weights winner, with Margriet Runarsdottir the women's champion.

Runners will have the chance to beat Jebb's time in the fell race when they return for next year's fair on Sunday, August 19.
