IT may not attract the same attention as Usain Bolt’s at the Olympics, but trainer James Moffatt is taking a leaf out of the champion sprinter’s book with a ‘Triple Triple’ bid of his own at Cartmel today.

After winning the last two runnings of the featured Totepool Cartmel Cup, Moffatt is hoping that he will complete the hat-trick with one of the three runners he will have in the £10,000 handicap hurdle.

“I never expected to win it twice, so it would be fantastic to win it for a third time and while I do have three runners, they are all there on merit and all of them have chances,” said Moffatt.

The trainer, whose yard is on the opposite side of the village and whose gallops can be seen from the course, has snapped up top riding talent for his three runners.

Sam Twiston-Davies, hot in pursuit of Richard Johnson in the jockeys’ championship, takes the mount on last year’s winner Captain Brown, a horse he partnered once before when finishing a close third in a similar race at Ayr’s Scottish National meeting.

Regular partner Brian Hughes is on board the 2014 winner Smart Ruler and Tony Kelly will ride Moffatt’s other runner Fantasy King.

“Sam rode a great race on Captain Brown at Ayr and will know the horse a bit better this time, while Brian knows how to get the best out of Captain Brown while Tony is on Fantasy King, who he rode to win the Weatherbys Hamilton Handicap Chase at the last meeting.

“I really can’t decide between the three of them, but hope one of them will win it for me. If I had to pick one, it would probably be Fantasy King, who gets in on a low weight as he is rated only 107 over hurdles, but has a handicap mark of 123 over fences,” said Moffatt.

Feature races on Monday’s Bank Holiday meeting are the Coral Cavendish Cup Handicap Chase and the Coral Handicap Hurdle, which could fall to two old favourites at Cartmel.

The 10-year-old Alderbrook Lad, who has won twice and been second twice on seven visits to Cartmel could land the Cavendish Cup for trainer Micky Hammond while the 12-year-old Goldan Jess, who has won three of his seven races at the track can beat a rare Emma Lavelle-raider Mr Mountain in the handicap hurdle.
