Hawcoat survive Roose wobble to land Furness Men's bowls title

It took them 11 years to regain the trophy in 2013, but after three years of Lindal dominance, they are deserved winners, having finished six points clear of runners-up King Alfred and having won the most number of matches.

They did not have it all their own way, as Roose won six of the top seven games and only a strong bottom-half performance saw them home.

Although King Alfred took eight of the 12 games at Walney Park, fine triumphs of 21-5 from Keith Dixon and 21-9 by Colin White gave the match a tense finish. Gary Hall’s 21-7 performance for the Alfred gave them the aggregate by just one chalk and the match 11-4.

Dave Kent and Chas Crellin, both 21-7, and Paul Kissock, 21-8, helped Lindal to a 13-1 success over Post Office, who had to thank Martin Lavender for that solitary point.

Red River reversed their early season 10-5 defeat to lodgers Police, with captain Stuart Aspinall the best winner for River and Mark Curwen for the Bobbies.

Norman Milburn won 21-6 as Askam came away from their visit to Co-op SC 10-5 victors, while Hawcoat Park A finally claimed a match for the first time this season, beating Dalton CC 8-6. Gareth Jones and Keith Banks were 21-7 winners for the Cricketers, but it was Geoff Maudsley’s 21-8 that helped the home side take the aggregate by just four chalks.

Lindal A produced their best away performance of the season to collect 12 points at West Shore and claim the runners-up spot in Division Two.

Champions King Alfred A had seven single-figure winners in their 12-2 victory over bottom side Kirkby, the best of which were Cec Turnbull, 21-3, Steve Hogg, 21-5, and 21-6 wins for Roly Price, Graham Rawley and Ian McDonald.

Division Three champions Police A finished the season in style winning 14-1 at Hawcoat Park C. Ian McBride was in scintillating form, winning 21-2, with Paul Curwen and Joe Cotton both winning to nine. Alan Troughton prevented the whitewash.
