THE Furness Firecrackers and Barrow Infernos roller derby set-up are ready to spark into life again after finding a new training facility.

The club have had to adopt a nomadic lifestyle over the past few years, switching training nights between the Barrow Park Leisure Centre and The Canteen, on Barrow Island.

Now Ulverston Leisure Centre have offered the club the chance to train at their indoor tennis court, with a grateful club spokesperson saying: “This is an amazing opportunity for us, as it will allow us to train on a full track, three extra nights a week.”

The roller derby club will also be running a beginners course for men and women, designed to help newcomers learn to skate and then get to grips with the fundamentals of one of the fastest growing sports in the UK.

Players who have already signed up for the Firecrackers women’s team or Infernos men’s team say they have benefited from improved fitness levels while enjoying an exciting team sport, and getting to travel to matches all over the country.

There will be a taster session at Barrow Park Leisure Centre on Friday March 31 followed by regular training sessions at their new home in Ulverston.

A new roller derby league will be starting at Ulverston Leisure Centre on Sunday April 2, with the club now recruiting for skaters, referees and non-skating officials.
