YOUNG anglers have proven their ability with some top displays in the Furness Fishing Association Coarse Section Junior League.

Club members have contested three rounds of the Home and Finance-sponsored competition on section waters, with some big catches recorded.

The third match of the season on the prolific Low Pond, sponsored by the Angling and Hiking Centre, saw the small carp fed well as Olivia Atkinston claimed the County Coachbuilders Trophy by taking 10lb 11oz to the scales.

William Ireland took home the Jonathan McWilliams Memorial Trophy in round four, sponsored by the Lisdoonie Hotel.

Ireland fished like a professional on Burn Hole to weigh in with 3lb 8oz.

Olivia Barker won the Fred Wheeler Memorial Trophy in round five on Low Pond.

She showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels when she weighed in with 16lb 7oz, in the Optech Fibres-sponsored contest. In the senior Summer League, Lee Fallows was in unbeatable form as he took victory in both of the last two rounds to seal an overall success.

Fishing for the Furness Trophy on Burn Hole, the evergreen angler took a nice mixed bag of 9lb 11oz to the scales to beat Mick Corran into second.

Fallows ended his campaign on a high in the Westmorland Cup, on High Pond, showing his class when he took the match with a fine 10lb 8oz. Jamie Atkinson set the early pace in the Autumn League, landing the Trent Cup on Rita. Atkinson mastered the deep venue and took the spoils with 13lb on the scales.

Phil ‘Spider’ Thompson hooked the Cumbria Collision Trophy on Low Pond as he weighed in with 11lb.

Away from the match scene, some excellent fish have been reported.

Leading the way was a huge carp that was taken in a section waters as Ben Little had a session never to be forgotten.

Fishing High Pond, his bait was taken by a carp which pulled the scales down to 43lb 10oz, a new section record.

The glut of big perch continues, with two large specimens reported. The first was successfully landed by junior member Ireland on Burn Hole, weighing in at 2lb. Another fish landed from the same venue by Corran weighed 1oz more. Martin Winward had a bite in the depths of Rita and was pleased when he weighed an eel that pulled the scales to an impressive 3lb 1oz.

The section’s bream have also been showing, particularly on Low Pond. The most recent was a fish of 3lb 5oz landed by Thompson.

Rita also has a reputation of good-sized bream, and Paul Clark is the latest angler to be rewarded with a fish that weighed in at 5lb 2oz.
