FURNESS Phantoms are hoping to attract several new recruits ahead of the 2018 gridiron season.

The Ulverston-based club – formerly known as Walney Terriers – are holding rookie days on consecutive Sundays in January in a bid to boost squad numbers.

Triallists do not need to have played American Football before, with Phantoms chairman David Hughes saying: “We are looking for all shapes and sizes, with or without experience. We have qualified coaches who can teach a complete beginner.”

The first rookie day takes place on Sunday January 7 at Ulverston Leisure Centre (11.30am to 1.30pm), with the second one being held at Furness Academy seven days later (from 12 noon to 2pm).

Added Hughes: “We are also looking for sideline staff for game days, and anyone who has interest in American Football who would like to help the club out, with pitch-marking or on the committee. We are also looking for sponsorship for next season. We have three different levels of sponsorship, starting with player sponsorship at £50 a year.”
