COTTAGES won the Friday League KO Cup for the third team, beating Barrow Football Supporters Club 19-10 at Vickerstown Cricket Club.

Cottages took wins in Welch Don, darts and billiards in the MW Flooring (Terry Murphy)-sponsored contest, with the Soccer Bar's only success coming in snooker against the league champions in that discipline.

It was on the snooker table where the night of action started, with the two top men, Tony Mason and Cottages captain John Tyerman playing the first frame.

Mason carved out a 26 break and led by 40 points with two red remaining, before finishing off with a 26 break to take the first points of the night for the Soccer Bar.

Next on the green baize were Soccer Bar’s billiards captain Jimmy Wilson against Steve Hetherington.

They shared small early breaks, before Hetherington knuckled down and went into a 20-point lead at the halfway stage.

He gradually increased his advantage and ran out at 100-67, celebrating with a run around the room.

Snooker aggregate winner Billy Burns and Soccer Bar captain Alan Eaton were next to the table.

Eaton dominated early on and had a 25-point, before Burns replied with a confident 16 break to keep himself in the game. Another 14 break saw him take the lead.

Eaton fought back, but a long red and a fine cut on the blue set Burns up. He played the finest of cuts in the bottom pocket as the pink just sneaked in to give him another snooker win.

The final snooker match saw Dave Simpson and Josh Howarth playing for crucial points.

Cottages' Dave took a 27-12 lead with a confident 14 break, but Howarth immediately replied with three reds and three blacks, showing his potting ability.

It was nip-and-tuck, and only five points separated the players going into the colours, with Howarth triumphing 68-54 on the final black, potting it in the top pocket.

There were four Welch Don games taking place while the baize action went on.

Dave Macmillan and Mala McCoy were first to finish with a 2-0 win for Cottages over Ron Davies and Dave Griffiths, coming from behind in both games.

Billy Bowes and Alan Reid added to the Cottages tally, with a 2-0 success against Alan Bonner and Barry Butterworth, before Soccer Bar’s Eric Salton and Brian Hotchkiss defeated Paul Fieldhouse and Tony Macmillan 2-1 in a close encounter.

Walter Bowes and Dave Leech sealed the final points for Cottages, winning 2-1 against Denis Plant and Harry Bateman, the 7-3 Welch Don margin having a big say on the final outcome.

On the oche, league champions Cottages triumphed 4-3, despite Bateman starting well for the Soccer Bar, hitting a ton on his way to beating Alan Fraser (121) with a double-top finish.

Barry Butterworth (101, 100) made it 2-0 by overcoming Bowes, before Cottages captain Shaun McPoland (125) struck back by beating opposite number Mike Edwards.

Howarth making it three wins for the Soccer Bar, against Dave Macmillan, before the top men came together, with Keith Moscrop taking on Mike Fletcher.

Neither player was at his best, but Moscrop (100) took it over Fletcher (140) with a double-10 knock-up.

Hetherington overcame Eaton to level the points – provoking another celebratory run – before Cottages star man McCoy finished off in style, hitting a 132 to start and a 101 to finish as he beat Denis Plant and sealed the KO Cup.

The second billiards game, between Tony Macmillan and Plant was played to a finish, with Macmillan taking the spoils.

The last billiard game between Bateman and Burns was conceded, with the result not making a difference to the final score.

The Friday League thanked Vickerstown Cricket Club for hosting the event and all the Vickerstown representatives for refereeing, scoring and officiating.

The next Friday League game are on February23, when the tied game for darts and will be held at the Navy Club to decide second and third place between Navy A and Navy B.
