CARTMEL trainer James Moffatt succeeded in his ambition of winning a ‘triple triple’ in the feature race of the August bank holiday meeting.

Moffatt took a leaf out of champion Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt’s book as he pulled off his third win in he Totepool Cartmel Cup, enjoying a resounding success with Captain Brown, ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies.

Moffatt entered three horses in the £10,000 handicap hurdle – winner Captain Brown, plus Fantasy King and Smart Ruler.

All three are old hands at Cartmel and were all well backed by punters who have followed Moffatt’s successes on his home track.

Moffatt said: “All three went into the race at odds of 8-1 and I really thought it could have been any of them who won it.

“Sam (Twiston-Davies) rode a class race. I said to him just as I was giving him a leg up on to Captain Brown that the horse has one really good run in him and needs holding back until the right moment.

“I would rather have seen him beaten because he was held back too long than beaten because he was allowed to get that good fast furlong in too early. Sam rode brilliantly and chose the perfect time.”

The August meeting was the first time Twiston-Davies had raced at the South Lakeland track all season and he celebrated with two emphatic wins.

The 24-year-old will no doubt face hot competition for the English Champion Jockey prize once again this year in the shape of Richard Johnson, who won the title last year as well as his triumph as Cartmel’s Champion Jockey. However, on Saturday all eyes ere on Moffatt and Captain Brown’s owner Mr Bowran who have now won the trophy together for the last three years.

Moffatt said: “It was a real triumph for the our team here and for one of my most loyal owners who has been with me for over 20 years.

“It is great when you’re traveling up and down the country every day just to make a real mark on one track.

“To win this triple is a great achievement for the whole team and I am over the moon that it was at our home track – Cartmel.

“Hopefully this will set me on course to win the Cartmel Champion Trainer’s title again this year, which is a real honour for me.”
