BRITISH Legion added another trophy to their Barrow Friday League cabinet with victory in the KO Cup final against Navy Club B.

The league’s billiards champions triumphed 17-11 at the Soccer Bar in the MW Flooring (Terry Murphy)-sponsored competition.

Snooker action started the night, with Mike Smith and Joe O’Leary first to the table.

Smith set off the better with a 15 break and another of 28 to leave O’Leary trailing, but an excellent selection of good snookers saw him claw his way back into the frame to take the lead.

Legion potter Smith took the pink and black for game, winning by a single point at 66-65.

Colin Taylor and Andy Charnley were nip-and-tuck all the way through, with Legion’s Taylor taking it by the narrowest of margins, 51-49.

The last snooker game of the night saw Legion captain Alf Carruthers take on Navy Club’s Dave Wilkie.

Carruthers started off the better, with a sizeable break, and stayed in control throughout, coming out the victor 60-22.

On the billiards table, Legion’s Allan Edmondson came up against Billy Wall, winning comfortably with the help of a 29 break.

The two billiards captains came together as Legion’s Peter Johnson battled Navy’s John Clamp.

A nervous start by both players saw the game equal up to the halfway stage, before Johnson pulled away to win 100-62.

Paul Kyle and Kevin Quinn rounded off the billiards action, Navy Club’s Kyle having the better start and producing a masterclass, including a tremendous 42 break, to triumph 100-24.

The green baize action was to prove decisive, with the Legion taking all six snooker points and four from the billiards.

In the Welch Don games, Quinn and Carruthers taking the first with a 2-0 result over Ken Johnson and Pat Fogharty.

The Legion pair won the first game with ease, their opponents only managing eight points. A closer game in the second saw Quinn and Carruthers win by just six points.

Navy captain Ray Procter and regular partner Pat Kyle triumphed with ease against Taylor and Gordon Hutton.

Team-mates Dave Rafferty and Chris Kirkby defeated Tony Woodward and John Sowerby, with Dave Wilkie and Dave Simpson getting the better of Edmondson and Tony Norman.

On the dartboard, Hutton took first blood for the Legion against Brian Linklater, pinching it on double three.

Wilkie pulled one back for the Navy, setting off with a ton score against Legion captain Woodward to give him the edge, and wrapping the game up on double six.

Rafferty took the third game against Taylor, who had a 130, before scores of 100 and 140 took his opponent down to his double in quick time.

Kirkby made it three wins in a row for the Navy side, winning comfortably against Kevin.

Norman took the next point for the Legion, knocking up on double 16 against O’Leary, with Mike Smith winning the penultimate game, as two ton scores down the board against Simpson proved key.

The final between Andy Charnley and Edmondson saw Charnley set off the better with a confident 95 score, but Edmondson hit back with two 90-plus scores and finished the game off with a 62 knock-up as Legion took the overall trophy for the fifth time.

The Friday League thanked the Soccer Bar for hosting the event and Jimmy Wilson, Denis Plant, Stuart Culbert and Mike Irving for officiating.

An outstanding snooker game will be played at the Barrow Football Supporters Club tomorrow, when the home side’s Harold Pearson takes on Paul Bennett, of Roose Cons.

A win for Pearson will see his side win the league title.

Tied games to decide league placings will be held at the British Legion on Friday, March 3. They are: Darts (fourth place): BFSC v Navy A Club; Don (fourth place): Navy A Club v Navy B Club.

A play-off to decide the snooker winners will take place between the Soccer Bar and the Cottages should Bennett win tomorrow’s final league game.
