LIZZIE Browne had to settle for second place when Black Combe Runners hosted the Dunnerdale Five Mile race in Broughton Mills.
Browne took silver in the ladies' category in a time of 46mins 24secs around the course, which included a 1,804-foot ascent and followed a route to the foot of Knott, past Raven Crag, Stickle Pike and Geat Stickle before a downhill run to the finish at the Blacksmith's Arms pub.
Conditions were slippy and boggy following heavy rain in the build-up, but Browne made good time and was only beaten in her category by Bingley Harriers' England international Victoria Wilkinson in 41:21, who beat the long-standing ladies' course record by nearly two minutes.
Browne did have the edge over Ambleside AC runner Kelli Roberts though, who came third in 47:06.
In total, 214 runners took part in the Dunnerdale race, including a record 39 BCR members, with others from the club taking on marshalling duties.
Harry Stainton was the first BCR member back in 41:10, which was good enough for fifth overall – and saw him beat Allithwaite 8 winner and clubmate Josh Hartley by just 178 seconds (44:08).
Rossendale Harriers' Sam Tosh, who is no stranger to winning fell races, narrowly pipped Matthew Elkington (Dark Peak Runners) for the overall win by clocking 39:17, with Elkington only seven seconds behind.
Meanwhile, first prize in the under-18s race went to Helm Hill Runners' Jacob Aubrey, who clocked 48:18.
The other BCR finishers were: Harvey Lord (44:36), Tim Ripper (45:29), Mark Bonner (46:28), Jamie Baron (46:48), James Harris (46:57), John Millen (48:09), Matthew Rooke (49:08), Hollie Orr (50:50), Joshua Murphy (51:04), Peter Tayler (52:49), Nick Sebley (54:06), Richard Walker (54:50), John Evason (55:16), Phil Clayton (55:24), John Parminter (57:03), Jackie Casey (59:04 and first V60 lady back), Mike Jewell (59:22), Chris Roberts (59:26), Lynn Murray (60:40), Richard Beard (61:09), Patrick McIver (62:35), Jess Lawrence (62:50), James Goffe (63:06), Jonathan Bailey (65:18), David Scott-Maxwell (66:53), Hazel Tayler (67:26), Sue Ross (69:02), Helen Walker (69:18), Lou Lyness (69:27), Viv Riley (70:33), Sean Tudor-Beard (70:56), Rob McKeever (71:58), Phil Newton (73:50), Andrew Gittins (76:32), Karl Fursey (79:04) and Susan Lomas (85:19).
BCR's last club championship road counters of the year are the Barrow-in-Furness, Fell Foot country park (Newby Bridge) or Millom 5km Park Run on any Saturday until December 9, at 9am. Only the best result counts if more than one is run.
