ULVERTON Tri Club kicked off their Winter Duathlon Series in perfect conditions.

The Autumn Kickstarter saw competitors tackle a 5km run, 17kn bike ride, and a second 5k run, starting out at Ulverston Tennis Centre.

In windless conditions – a rarity of late as storms have been battering the South Cumbrian coast – there was a good battle of running and riding.

Mark Benson, returning once more from Tri Lakeland, stormed the men’s event to win in one hour, three minutes and 59 seconds, ahead of UTC’s Kie Jackson (1:08:16) and Mike Gregory (1:11:03).

The 5km run route took the competitors along Priory road, down Brick Kiln Lane to the beach and back then through transition, pausing briefly to change shoes and put their helmets on.

They then set off on their bikes down the Coast Road to Aldingham for the 17km bike leg, before retracing their running steps.

In a keenly-contested women’s race, UTC’s Amy Whelan came out on top with a strong second run to finish in 1:15:48 seconds, edging Lucy Jackson-Jones (UTC, 1:19:26) into second, with Carlisle’s Lucy Lamb only four seconds further back in third.

The next UTC duathlon is The Winter Warmer, setting off at 10am from Ulverston Tennis Centre on Sunday, November 26.
