BARROW Central Wheelers are celebrating success for two of their riders in gruelling bike challenges.

Christina Wiejak and David Huck have both claimed victories in major regional races.

Building on an impressive season overall, Wiejak left the highlight of her campaign until late on, as she won the arduous Three Peaks cyclo-cross event in a time of four hours five minutes.

It was a ride which built on last year's accolade of highest-placed first-time rider, and came on the back of numerous club and course records in time trials and hill climbs.

Earlier in the year, she finished the 100-mile-plus Fred Whitton Challenge around the gruelling Lake District passes in six hours 46 minutes.

Huck embarked upon a successful season of hill climbing after posting a clutch of club and course records on the time trials.

The British Cycling second category rider is a hill-climb specialist, and kicked off the season by dominating local events before heading to defend his North Lancs Time Trial Association title.

The championship race took place on the iconic Rake Hill Climb in Ramsbottom, with Huck finishing an impressive fourth overall, and an agonising two seconds off the podium.

This was enough to successfully defend his title and, notably, he was the best placed unsponsored rider on the day.

It is the third consecutive year Huck has won the title, and he is focused on the National Hill climb Championships, which take place in Northumberland at the end of the month.

The Wheelers will be hosting a round of the North West Cyclo-cross League at Glaxo Sports Club, Ulverston, on Saturday, November 11.

There will be races for under-eights, under-10s, under-12s, youths and open-age over a 3km off-road course.

Racing starts at 10.30am, with the final race for the senior and junior men under way at 2.30pm.

The course is a mixture of tarmac, grass, bankings and obstacles, which can be ridden on a dedicated cyclo-cross bike or on a mountain bike.

Entry is open to anyone, though a certain level of fitness would be beneficial to get the most out the race, sponsored by Velo Ulverston, Topmark and Ride Bikes, who will also provide maintenance support alongside other trade stands.

Moveable Feast and Sweet Treats and Glaxo Sports Club will prodive refreshments.
