BARROW ABC fighters are getting busy in the ring as the season swings into gear following the summer break.

Two Brook Street boxers are in action this Saturday, with Josh Jones competing in the quarter-finals of the 69-75 kilo under-ten-bouts senior novices championships in Manchester, and then down the East Lancs Road in Liverpool, Steve Eilbeck is contesting a 60-kilo English title eliminator.

There are several Barrow ABC fighters going for glory in the novices championships. One of these is big Jim Braithwaite, who has landed the 91+ kilo belt without even lacing up his gloves and will go through to the divisional finals.

Paul O'Reilly, fresh from victory in Cleator Moor, has a bye through to the semi-finals of the 75-81 kilo under-20-bouts novices championships. Tia Davies will box in the 69-75 kilo women's novices championships.

Barrow ABC head coach Jeff Moses said of O'Reilly's victory in West Cumbria: "He took the bout at short notice and it was the last fight on so the atmosphere was lively.

"Paul lost the first round but took the second and then the other lad had a standing count in the third so Paul won on points. It was a good effort."

He added: "It's been a good start. Jim is a champion without even putting a glove on, and Paul has had a win and is in a semi-final. We are up and running."
