LIZZIE Browne left the rest of the field trailing in her wake as she claimed victory in the 17km multi-terrain Grasmere Gallop.

The England international and Black Combe Runners member finished nearly three minutes clear of second-placed, and lead male, runner Ben Martin-Dye, with an impressive clocking of one hour, 11 minutes and six seconds.

Of the other three Black Combe Runners competing, Ian Verber clocked 1:50:48 and Sophie Roberts was 11 minutes behind him in 2:01:37. Martin Currie retired during the race.

Browne is not the only female runner from the club to enjoy success recently, as Hollie Orr triumphed in the ladies' race at Kirkby-in-Furness gala.

Orr completed the 4.5-mile, 1,300-foot ascent BOFRA fell race course in 47:27, finishing just over two-and-a-half minutes clear of second-placed Kirsty Hall, of Ribble Valley Harriers.

Of the other Black Combe runners, Kirkby resident Josh Hartley was first male back in fifth spot, clocking 43:04. Also running were Matthew Rooke (46:27), Peter Tayler (52:18), Dan Hartley (56:38), Jess Lawrence (57:48), Simon Austin (58:39) and Susan Ross (62:08).

James Harris led the way for the club at the recent Buttermere Horseshoe Fell Race, which saw a total of 11 members taking part in the English championship counter from Loweswater.

Harris clocked 4:19L51, followed by Edward Gleadowe coming home 21 minutes later.

Harvey Lord (4:51:13), Hollie Orr (4:51:24), Josh Hartley (4:56:00), Tim Ripper (5:10:00), Anna Lupton (5:14:28), Peter Coupe (5:46:49), Sarah Pike (5:54:38), Steve Wathall (6:52:34) and Jessica Orr (7:22:01) were the other BCR members taking part.

Hazel Tayler became the first Black Combe female runner to compete in the Joss Naylor Challenge, which involved running between Patterdale and Joss's house at Greendale, in the Wasdale Valley, taking in many of the high fells en-route within a certain time. With perfect weather and great support, she completed the 42-mile route well within the time limit.

On the road, Hoad Hill Harriers' David Fulford took victory in the inaugural Haverigg Lighthose 10k, finishing the undulating course which started at the Ski Bar and headed through the centre, over the Knott road, back into Millom, past the Hodbarrow nature reserve and along the seawall to finish a short distance past the 100-plus-year-old lighthouse in 39.19.

Black Combe's Gavin Lloyd took second in 40:51 and Fulford's club-mate Jeffrey Chadwick was third in 42:02.

Other BCR members taking part were Jonathan Bailey (50:34), Darren Foote (53:41), Karl Fursey – with his best 10k time so far this year – (58:47) and Viv Riley (66:22).

Simon Austin was the sole member of the club to take part in the Lancaster 3-1-5 Health Club 5k race, coming home in under 20 minutes thanks to a clocking of 19.37.

The popular Riverside 10-mile race at Lancaster St George's Quay, is the next road counter on Sunday, August 5 at 11am, from the Wagon and Horses pub. Entry is available in advance or on the day.
