ULVERSTON Tri Club members have been putting in some more great performances home and abroad.

Great Britain regular Ren Brennan produced another sterling effort on foreign soil as she earned fourth place in category representing GB at the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships, in Denmark.

Much closer to home, half-a-dozen UTC members dug deep to pass the UK Ironman test in Bolton in soaring temperatures last weekend.

Mike Gregory led the way as he finished in 85th place from a field of more than 1,800, after recording a superb time of nine hours, 49 minutes and 35 seconds.

Gregory completed the 2.4-mile lake swim in Pennington Flash Country Park in 1:23:59. He then flew round the 112-km bike course in the leafy Lancashire countryside in 4:34:26 and then ran a 3:43:04 marathon in the host town to land 21st place in the 40-44 age category.

Next home for UTC was Stuart Garnett, clocking an impressive 10:35:47, while club skipper Ben Park knocked one-and-a-half-hours off his finishing time last year, as he crossed the line in 11:47:39.

Mark Swainson also put in a good day’s work to get round the course in 12:45:44.

Representing UTC ladies, Annaliese Sales (13:52:01) and Ally White (16:01:26) completed a terrific effort by the club’s contingent, in punishing conditions which saw hundreds fail to finish the race.

The previous day, a handful of UTC members headed to the hot and sunny North Lakes to take part in the Ullswater Triathlon – an event which had to be altered to a duathlon because of the presence of dangerous Blue Green Algae in the water which made the lake unfit for swimming.

On a day when athletes would have appreciated a refreshing dip, the standard-distance race started instead with a 2.5km run, followed by a 26-mile bike course and then a 10k run.

Leading the way for UTC was Tom Southward – with an excellent 44-minute 10k in scorching conditions enabling him to clock 2:25:40 for 27th place.

Southward’s Glaxo Hoad Hill Harriers club-mate Amy Whelan was not far behind in 2:27:56 for 34th place and fourth lady home.

And there was double joy in the sprint race, with GB ace Lucy Jackson-Jones winning the women’s event and finishing 10th overall in 1:26:07, while super veteran George Hodgson took the V70 class in 1:55:13.
