HELEN Jackson and Tom Gibbs added further Lakeland Lanequest titles to their trophy cabinet after victories in the 2018 series.

The pair wrapped up success in the women's and men's solo classes respectively after the last round of action from Wilf's Café, Staveley.

Course organisers David and Zoe Cowgill managed to devise a route map with a few new challenges – with competitors having to navigate through throngs of tourists and even the Noddy Train in Bowness.

It was a route where local knowledge was a definite plus, and with many hills in the area to the west and south of event HQ, route choice was critical.

None of this prevented multiple series men’s champion Gibbs, from Backbarrow, from weaving his usual magic – with faultless route selection and unmatched performance on the bike seeing him take the win, despite the best efforts of runner-up David Heffernan, of Ulverston.

Jackson, another multiple series champion, proved yet again she is difficult to beat – but it wasn’t without a fight from last year's runner-up, Haverthwaite’s Jo Cleary, who had to settle for second overall once more in the series.

The generation pairs saw a decisive first-time series victory for Gerard and Tony Winnard, and the adult pairs – always competitive to the last – saw Barrow teacher Ben Procter and brother Lee repeat their success of 2017.

More than 300 competitors took part in this year's six-event series – the 23rd of the event’s running.

Prizes were presented by Toby Dalton, of series sponsor Wheelbase, and Lakeland Lanequest organiser Rachel Toyn in Wilf's Café after the event.

For those looking to continue where they left off, the Winter Series kicks off on Sunday, September 2.
