Hard work pays dividends as Walney course beats floods

GREENSKEEPERS at Furness Golf Club have been working hard to ensure the course has stayed open through the past week despite the torrential deluges that have hit the county.

The Walney club – who last month were awarded the English Golf Union Golfmark Award for their work with juniors – have kept the course playable throughout the worst of the bad weather.

Head greenkeeper Alick McKay and his team have, over the past five years, turned the course into a venue that has hosted both county and EGU events, helping it cope with the worst the elements can throw at it.

“This club has been turned round in the last five-and-a-half years and the events we are hosting speak for themselves as to what has happened,” said McKay. “The work we have done on the course is paying dividends.

“We have been trying to improve the place and get more members in through improving the course. With all the flooding there has been in Cumbria there have not been many courses open, but we are one of the courses that is open.”
