AN impressive £465 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support on Lady Captain’s Day at Windermere Golf Club.

This year’s Lady Captain, Pam Tigg, was keen for the event to be fun, and 59 women took part in the morning stableford with many playing later in a nine hole Texas scramble.

Rosemary Wadworth won the stableford, with Janet Baines second while last year’s Lady Captain Jane Harper was third.

Despite the initial spot of murky weather, creating the desired atmosphere of fun was achieved.

Tigg said: “I was delighted to continue the tradition of raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support on Lady Captain’s Day.

“The ladies enjoyed themselves and the event was a great success. I would like to thank everyone involved in the day for making it so special.”

More than 70 women attended an evening dinner and prize-giving.

Ulverston golf captain sets sights on £1,500 charity target

ULVERSTON captain Steve Parkinson hopes his big fundraiser will raise at least £1,500 for charity.

Parkinson and Ulverston lady captain, Doreen Clegg, are combining their efforts to raise cash for the North West Air Ambulance and Duddon Inshore Rescue.

Parkinson's charity golf competition takes place this Sunday, while Clegg will host a similar charity event in September.

Both male and female players are able to enter Sunday's open competition with 39 teams of four signed up so far - with each quartet paying £50 between them - which means more than 150 golfers will participate.

Parkinson, who is 67 and lives in Ulverston, said: "I'm very much looking forward to the day.

"A lot of planning goes into it and a small group of friends have helped me, so it's not just me. There's been Doreen and two or three other folk and we've been meeting fairly regularly to sort out the details.

"This is one of the important days of my year as captain. I hope the weather is fine and that people enjoy it, that's the main thing. It's an enjoyable format."

While the two best scores from each team will count in the competition, the proceeds from the day - excluding the cost of buying prizes - will be injected into the charity pot.

With 12 prizes on offer, the players that make up the winning team will receive club shop vouchers worth £60. And other golf clubs, including Barrow and Grange-over-Sands, will offer free rounds of golf to other prize-winners.

Businesses and individuals have sponsored the tournament and further charity events, outside the fundraising competitions, will also raise money over the coming months.

Parkinson added: "We always pick local charities, they are important.

"We've had a lot of support. A few weeks ago we didn't have a full field, but it has filled up which is great."
