HOME players Sue Chapman and Mary Simpson proved victorious in the Ulverston Golf Club Ladies Charity Open.

They came out on top in a fourball betterball tournament played in glorious conditions, which attracted more than 100 ladies.

With the course looking its best, owing to the dedication of excellent greens staff and sunshine, Chapman and Simpson edged ahead of Ulverston’s Sarah Cousins and county lady captain Sheena McDonald, of Kendal.

The Open raised more than £1,000 for the NSPCC Furness Fundraisers, a group of volunteers who raise money to help provide treatment for abused children in our area.

Loretta Blackburn, chairwoman of Furness Fundraisers and a member of Ulverston Golf Club, said: “Working together with such willing and hardworking captains and vice-captains has been inspirational.

“Halfway through the year, all expectations have been exceeded following the enormously successful lady captain Marion McBride’s Charity Open.”

McBride congratulated the winners and thanked everyone who helped make the day so successful, with a special thank you to Blackburn for her tireless work arranging sponsorship of the tees and greens, and the raffle prizes.

She also gave a thank you to all the businesses and individuals who sponsored the event.
