Furness sporting sensations bid for Cumbria prizes

SEVERAL Barrow Borough Sports Council award winners are eyeing more prizes at this week’s Cumbria Sports Awards.

Newly-crowned Barrow Sportsperson of the Year Dean Kelly is in the running for another major award.

Kelly returned home from August’s World Dwarf Games in Belfast a hero, after scooping four gold medals, in the 100 and 200 metres, the relay and football.

The sporting all-rounder, who also picked up silver medals in power-lifting, javelin and discus at the games, collected his Sportsperson of the Year award at the Barrow Borough Sports Council Sports Awards, held at the town hall on Friday night.

He is also in the running to be named Cumbria’s Sports Personality of the Year at this Friday’s awards presentation dinner at the Low Wood Hotel, Windermere,

Outstanding Furness golfer Hollie Weatherburn is also in contention.

Hollie is one of the county’s most successful girl golfers of recent years, winning the girls county championship three years running and also winning the ladies title this year.

She led the Cumbria ladies team and is currently playing golf and studying in Western Texas, pursuing her dream to becoming a ladies tour golfer.

Other contenders for the sports personality award include Workington’s Sebastian Crookhall-Nixon, England under-16 golf champion; Kendal’s Glen Robinson, a member of the Great Britain waterpolo Olympic squad; outstanding cyclo-cross performer Rob Jebb, of Staveley; James Ellison, who finished second in the British Superbikes championship; and British drag racing sprint champion Alan Tinnion, from Silloth.

Barrow Raiders, who were crowned Barrow Borough Sports Council Sports Awards Open Age Team of the Year, have been shortlisted for the Cumbria Sports Awards Team of the Year award. The Raiders, under coach Dave Clark, triumphed in both the Co-operative Championship and the Grand Final.

Other contenders in that section include the county golf team, who won the Northern Counties League title and Furness CC, who achieved a North Lancs and Cumbria Premier Division and Higson Cup double.

Askam table tennis ace Emily Bolton, who lifted the Barrow Borough Sports Council Junior Sportsperson of the Year, is one of the contenders for the county junior sports personality prize.

Other contenders include swimmers Joe Ellwood (Swarthoor), Frazer Minnican (Pennington) and Ashleigh Dale (Roose); England Under-16s rugby player Ryan Shaw, from Ulverston; 800 metres runner Sam Nicholson, from Askam; Liam Livingstone, who has established himself at Lancashire CCC Academy and has represented England Under-16s; orienteer Maxwell O’Hara, of Ulverston; and outstanding young baseball players Dale Hargan and Ben Pearson, from Grange.

The Duddon Youth Wild Water Racing Team, who won the Barrow Borough Sports Council Junior Team of the Year, have been shortlisted for the Junior Team of the Year.

In the running for the Performance of Year award are Barrow mountain biker Dale Russell and Coniston-born runner Gemma Miles.

The host of candidates for the Service to Sport award include Furness RUFC chairman Chris Reid; Ruth and Phil Haughian, who have been involved with Furness Cavaliers football club for many years; John Pownceby, who has been involved in physical education and school sport for over 30 years; and 80-year-old Tommy MacLaughlin, who is still deeply involved with local football in the Furness area.

All four of the above contenders received Barrow Borough Sports Council Service to Sport awards at the town hall on Friday night.

After-dinner speaker at the awards will be Alison Mowbray, Olympic rowing silver medallist, and the dinner will be attended by a delegation from London 2012, including former Olympic triple jump champion Jonathan Edwards.
