Furness's sporting men of mystery

FURNESS sports fans, your help is needed in identifying some players from the past.

Ray Wallace, of Ainslie Street, Barrow, has very kindly submitted these pictures in the hope that by publishing them in the sports pages, it might jog a few memories and lead to names being given to mystery faces.

The picture above shows a Roose rugby league team, from the 1966/67 season. The only players identified are Big Frank H, Alan Carswell (known as Happy Jack), Barry Leake (captain), George and Mike Salmon and Geoff Drury.

The middle picture shows the Marine Installation Department rugby league team from Barrow Shipbuilding works, who were set to entertain a Crabtree-Vickers works side at Craven Park.

The year is unknown – with those haircuts is has to be the 1970s! – and the only person named is John Elliott, a grade one referee from Barrow and secretary of the Barrow and District Amateur Rugby League. He is on the back row, far right. The names Barry Leake and Mike Brown have also been mentioned as being present, but it is not known which players they are.

The bottom picture shows the Alfred Barrow second year cricket team from 1961.

Again, many of the players are unknown, but the back row does feature Mr Carruthers, Brian Pearce and Arthur Spencer and on the front row are Geoff Drury and Pete Marshall.

Can you help Ray and ourselves fill in the gaps and shed some light on who these Furness sportsmen are? If you can identify any of the other players, please contact us via email to sport.em@cnmedia.co.uk or by calling 01229 850158.
