A LATE winner saw Hawcoat Park denied a share of the spoils against high-flying Milnthorpe Corinthians as they fell to a 2-1 defeat.

Hawcoat haven’t quite hit the form of last season which saw them lift the President’s Cup, but Trevor Houston’s young side have been ticking along nicely in mid-table in the West Lancs League Division One.

Park knocked the free-scoring visitors well and truly out of their stride with a well-taken Jake Rees goal, as he cut in from the right hand side and finished well, to give them a 1-0 half-time lead.

It could have been even better for Hawcoat as they had at least three superb chances to add to their first goal but a combination of good goalkeeping and indecisive finishing proved costly.

Five minutes into the second half Milnthorpe were level and with the game seemingly heading towards a draw Corinthians showed why they are favourites for promotion by grabbing a late winner.

Sam Stephens then made a good a penalty save for Hawcoat and a final chance went begging for the home side. Christian Sloan and Gregg Sharp were the pick of the Hawcoat players.

The other local teams in the West Lancs Division One didn’t fare any better as Crooklands Casuals lost 1-0 at Stoneclough, with Cassies keeper Ben Sowerby in excellent form, while Askam had a day to forget as they lost 7-0 at Poulton.

In the North West Counties Holker Old Boys lost 2-1 to Sandbach United. Danny Keenan, who has just received the league’s player of the month award for October, scored a rebound after his own penalty was saved to level the scores, but Sandbach found a winner with only five minutes remaining.
