MORE heavy rain during the week – a recurring theme of late – saw most local games fall by the wayside once again.

However, the ever-dependable Tummerhill was passed fit to play and saw Walney Island defeat Kendal United 2-0 in a West Lancs League Division Two clash.

The Islanders started the game four points behind Kendal so knew a win would close the gap and push them up the table, with games in hand over the teams above them.

The home side started the game on the front foot and should have been 3-0 up inside the first fifteen minutes.

Kieran Sollaway and Matt Lockley were giving the visiting back four a torrid time but found the Kendal keeper in good form and both were guilty of some wayward finishing.

Sollaway had a penalty appeal turned down when he was through on goal and about to shoot, and moments later he beat his man and was fouled on the bye-line just outside the box.

Josh Gay whipped in a free-kick and Steve Brennan was first to react and glanced a header home at the front post.

Walney were very much on top of the game and Josh Gay had another free-kick well saved by the keeper.

Just before the half-time whistle Kendal had their first real effort, when their lively centre forward showed a clean pair of heels to get away from his marker, but the covering defence made life difficult for him and his shot was well saved by Jordan Belcher.

Kendal were a different prospect in the second half and applied the pressure on Walney, but the home side’s back four soaked up everything Kendal could throw at them.

Mattie McKee made some trademark tackles to avert danger. Fraser Miles was keeping his flank well marshalled and Sam Clayton was winning his personal battle with the Kendal striker.

For all their possession Kendal didn’t really trouble Belcher in the Walney goal. Will Boulton, Josh Huitson and Tommy Wilson came into the game and their tireless running and tackling saw Kendal give the ball to Lockley who went through on goal but poked his shot just wide of the post.

It looked like the missed chances were going to cost Walney late in the game but the points were secured when Sollaway pounced on a defensive mistake and crossed for Nick Beach who smashed home from 12 yards out.

Walney saw out the game, with fresh legs in the shape of James Bailey and Kyle Carter shoring up the midfield. Mattie McKee was the pick of the back four and took the man of the match award.

The Walney coaching team of Steve McCullough and Craig Savage will be happy with their team’s progress this season.

They have matched last season’s points tally and still have 14 games remaining.
