DALTON United are aiming to achieve what no other side in the West Lancs League has managed this term – to beat Leyland.

The Lancashire side head to Railway Meadow tomorrow, boasting an impressive record of 14 wins and two draws from their 16 Division Two matches.

Leyland lie second in the table, two points behind Ladybridge – but with four games in hand on the leaders – and are favourites for the title.

This rearranged fixture will see Dalton up against a side they had been beating 4-1 away from home back in October – until things spiraled out of control.

Firstly, Leyland recovered to lead 5-4 and then a match which was played in poor conditions was abandoned by the referee following some ugly scenes.

Andrew Marshall’s United will have every right to feel quietly confident ahead of tomorrow’s clash.

The Red and Blacks have been in decent form since the turn of the year on the occasions they have actually managed to beat the weather and get out on the park.

Dalton won 3-0 at Euxton Villa reserves when the club’s goalscorer extraordinaire Gareth Jones helped himself to a brace.

Jones was on target again the following week when they beat Lostock St Gerards 3-2, with Jack Hurst and Kevin Holmes also netting.

Dalton know they will have to be at their best against a Leyland side who have netted 73 league goals in their 16 games to date.

Walney Island were the latest side to feel their force when they lost 4-2 in Lancashire last weekend.

Having said that, the Islanders did fight back from 4-0 down, with goals from Kieran Sollaway and Sam Clayton making it a nervy last 10 minutes for the home side.

If Dalton do manage to end Leyland’s unbeaten record, they will boost their own hopes of a top-five finish and also do Millom a big favour.

Danny Pattinson’s side sit one place below Leyland and are still harbouring hopes of grabbing one of the two promotion spots up for grabs. But athough they have two games in hand on Leyland and six on Ladybridge Millom are ten points off second spot and face the prospect of falling further off the pace tomorrow.

That is because Pattinson’s side take a break from league action as they cross Jubilee Bridge to take on Vickerstown reserves in a Furness Senior Cup tie.

Victory for Dalton over Leyland would certainly be celebrated in Millom, as would a Furness Rovers win over front-runners Ladybridge when they clash at the Training Pitch.

Despite that defeat at Leyland, the division’s other South Cumbrian club, Walney, are handily placed in sixth spot ahead of their trip to a Charnock Richard reserves team two places above them.

Vickerstown’s quest for West Lancs League Premier Division survival sees them journey down the M55 to take on the might of leaders Blackpool Wren Rovers.

Division One action sees Hawcoat Park, Ulverston Rangers and Askam United all hit the road – with trips to CMB, Lostock and Milnthorpe respectively.

Holker Old Boys will aim to boost their North West Counties Division One play-off hopes as they take on lowly St Helens Town at Rakesmoor Lane.

Only one game played locally survived the downpours last weekend, with Crooklands Casuals reserves edging Haverigg reserves 3-2 at Wilson Park to boost their promotion hopes in the Premier Tiles Furness Division One.

Cassies lie third behind Hawcoat Park A and Millom A, and will eye victory at Barrow Celtic reserves to keep them in touch.

Leaders Hawcoat host mid-table Barrow Wanderers, while Millom are in derby action at home to Haverigg.
