DAVE Round described Vickerstown’s win at Blackpool Wren Rovers as one of the best performances he has seen in his 11 years with the club.

The Town boss will be hoping last weekend’s 3-2 victory against the West Lancs League Premier Division pacesetters will be the catalyst for the Walneyites to power up the table.

Round’s men are still fighting for their lives in second-bottom position, but three points against the runaway leaders has closed the gap between them and the rest of the bottom five.

And what the result will also have done is give the Vickerstown players big belief in themselves that if they can beat the best in the division they can pretty much beat anyone.

That theory will be put to the test for the first time tomorrow when they host mid-table Coppull United at Park Vale – weather permitting.

First-half goals from the manager’s sons Jackson Round and Dave Round Jnr, plus Sean Paterson, gave them a commanding lead and two late replies from the leaders were not enough to spoil the party.

Vickerstown will be praying the Park Vale pitch is playable after more heavy rain this week – and that goes for all local clubs, with the opening weeks of 2018 seeing many games postponed and the prospect of end-of-season fixture pile-ups already looking likely.

Out of the area’s 10 West Lancs League teams, only Vickerstown and Askam played last weekend, and Holker Old Boys – the sole representatives in the North West Counties set-up – were also out of action.

Guy Heffernan’s Holker are scheduled to go to Atherton LR in a mid-table Division One clash tomorrow, where they will hope to beat both the weather and the opposition to boost their play-off hopes.

Askam lost 3-0 at Milnthorpe Corinthians but still hold pole position out of the four local clubs in West Lancs Division One ahead of their trip to leaders Hurst Green.

Hawcoat Park are also on the road at Kendal County, while Crooklands Casuals and Ulverston Rangers have home games against Mill Hill St Peters and Eagley respectively.

Division Two promotion hopefuls Millom are the only local team with home advantage as they welcome Euxton Villa reserves to town.

Furness Premier League teams fared a lot better than their West Lancs counterparts last weekend, with 11 matches taking place across the three divisions.

After beating Britannia 4-2, Premier Division leaders Hawcoat Park reserves can take another step towards the title, although they could face a tough test at third-placed Swarthmoor Social, beaten by Haverigg last weekend.

Second-placed Haverigg United should be too strong for Walney Island reserves at Wilson Park, with the villagers no doubt oozing confidence after moving above Swarthmoor by beating them 3-0 last week.

Anthony Foster, Bradley Maine and the prolific John Chmiel did the damage.
