FREE-SCORING Walney Island are in good shape for a top-five finish in the West Lancs League Division Two.

The Yellow and Blues displayed their attacking flair last weekend with a 6-1 hammering of Thornton Cleveleys reserves.

Skipper Kieran Solloway showed with the way with the opening goal, while James Bailey and Steve Brennan both grabbed braces and one-time Barrow Raiders flier Nick Beach was also on target.

No-one in the division will fancy playing Walney on this form, and a trip to lowly Euxton Villa reserves tomorrow could see them bag another three points.

While Walney’s aspirations this season are restricted to finishing in the top four or five, their local rivals from around Duddon Estuary, Millom, still harbour hopes of promotion to Division One.

A 4-1 home win over Lostock St Gerards reserves last weekend saw Millom keep in touch with the leading two, Ladybridge and Leyland.

Danny Pattinson’s side are facing a hectic final few months of the season, highlighted by the fact they have seven games in hand on pacesetters Ladybridge.

All they can really do is take one game at a time, and if the positive results keep coming Millom have a fighting chance of plugging the gap between themselves and the top two. That task starts tomorrow with a top-four battle at Charnock Richard reserves.

Elsewhere, the inconsident Dalton United will hope to get back to winning ways at home to Kendal United.

Furness Rovers have a must-win home game against relegation rivals Padiham reserves. Along with Rovers, Furness Cavaliers are also precariously placed in second-from-bottom, and could do with a win at home to Tempest United reserves.

In the Premier Division, Vickerstown’s recent upsurge in form continued as they triumphed 3-0 at Coppull United, with goals from Steve Kewley, Rob Bruce and Danny Cummings doing the business.

Dave Round’s men are still second-from-bottom but are within touching distance of lower mid-table.

And after winning 3-2 at leaders Blackpool Wren Rovers recently, there is no reason why the Walneyites cannot upset another of the division’s high-fliers when they head to third-placed Fulwood.

Crooklands Casuals could do with a few wins to drag themselves away from the wrong end of the first division.

The Dalton side have the perfect opportunity to get three points as they entertain the team immediately below them, Fulwood reserves, in what is a big game at Longlands Park.

One place above Cassies in the Division One standings are local rivals GSK Ulverston Rangers and they also have a great chance of victory as they host cellar-dwellers Mill Hill St Peters.

The other two Furness reprsesentatives in the division – Askam United and Hawcoat Park – hit the road.

Fresh from their 5-2 hammering of Kendal County, Askam head to mid-table rivals Lostock St Gerards, while Park will face a major test of their abilities at front-runners Hurst Green.

Holker Old Boys suffered a setback to their North West Counties Division One play-off hopes in midweek when they lost 4-1 at Carlisle City, one of the few positives being Craig Redhead’s goalscoring return.

Guy Heffernan is sure to get his side fired-up for tomorow’s home match against Oswestry Town as they look to get back to winning ways.

Furness Premier League pacesetters Hawcoat Park reserves will also be keen to do the same, after suffering a rare loss when Holker seconds beat them 3-2 at Rakesmoor Lane.

Hawcoat are at home to Walney Island reserves, while second-placed Haverigg United – nine points adrift but with two games in hand – head to fourth-placed Kirkby United in what could be a cracking encounter.

Park’s third string will hope to keep the pressure on Division One leaders Millom A when they head to Lesh Lane to take on Barrow Wanderers.

The pacesetters should take the spoils against bottom club Haverigg United reserves, although the hosts will be determined to gun down their local rivals and claim the bragging rights.
