FURNESS Cavaliers have got West Lancashire League officials studying their record books.
They want to know if Chris Lysons’ goal after just 10 seconds at Duddon Road on Saturday is the fastest in the league’s history.
From the kick-off, the ball was sent wide to Steve Kewley. He beat two men before crossing for Lysons to steer the ball home from six yards out.
West Lancs League secretary Jon Brown said: “It could be one of the quickest, if not the quickest goal.
“In the back of my mind I recall there was a very quick goal a few years ago – but 10 seconds takes some beating.”
The goal sent Cavaliers on their way to a terrific away victory and revenge for their Division Two home defeat against the same opponents earlier in the season.
It got worse for Askam just two minutes after the opener. This time Lysons returned the favour, crossing for Kewley to make it 2-0.
Askam keeper Scott Dempsey then made a brilliant save to deny Joe Murphy in a one-on-one situation, but there was no holding a rampant Cavaliers.
The visitors almost went three goals ahead when Andrew Oxley broke clear, but the ball took a bobble and he skied his effort well wide.
With Sean Critchley giving what Cavs manager Lee Rodgers called an “immense performance”, striding out of defence and setting up play with great passes, Askam just could not get a foothold in the game.
Askam’s one first-half chance came just before the interval but Scott Linklater produced a great save.
Cavaliers tried to keep up the pressure and when Kewley carried the ball some 40 yards, Murphy put his effort wide.
Jordan Dix was then denied by Dempsey, but it was inevitable that more goals would come.
They duly arrived, with both Lysons and Kewley bagging their second goals of the game to make it 4-0.
“We just didn’t turn up,” was the verdict of disappointed Askam manager Colin Rayner.
“You train all week, prepare properly and then don’t tackle and don’t defend properly. In no time we were two down and heads had dropped.
“Take nothing away from Cavaliers, they were the better side by a mile. They played the right stuff – the basic pass and move.
“We were poor all over the field.
“We have played better in games where we lost 8-0.
“I can take nothing from the game. With a struggle I can pick out Kyle Jefferson, Jordan Rayner, Mark Treen and Damian Thompson, but you can’t play with just four men. I think we only had three chances. I’m told we hit the bar in the closing stages but whose shot it was I don’t know. I had lost all interest by then.”
