KIRKBY United hosted Bootle in the first round of the Terry Clinton Memorial Trophy and it’s the home side who are in the hat for the second round after a convincing 7-2 win.

The game was 0-0 for the first 30 minutes with both teams trying to take command of proceedings. Bootle were first to score when Steve Pritt ghosted in unmarked at the far post and the deftest of touches put the visitors ahead.

The lead was shortlived as Kirkby hit back almost immediately through Paul Cleasby who fired home from the edge of the box.

Kirkby then got themselves in front after some good play from Scott Watkinson. His cross was met by Tom Wildgoose to head home.

Bootle got themselves back in the game as they equalised before half-time as Joe Capstick was found unmarked in the box and he made no mistake to level the scores at 2-2.

In the last action of the first half a good Kirkby move left Matty Bruce in acres of space and he ran in on goal and fired home.

The goal just before half-time was a massive momentum changer in the game as it seemed to give Kirkby a huge lift.

Matty Bruce got his second minutes after the restart and Scott Dempsey made it five shortly afterwards with a bullet header.

Bootle never gave up the fight and it wasn’t until the last five minutes of the game that Kirkby killed the tie with a Saunders penalty and Bruce completing his hat-trick in the last minute.
