KIRKBY United provided fireworks in front of goal with a magnificent seven last weekend – and their cracking form could make it a happy Bonfire Night for the Villagers.

The reigning Furness Premier League champions are handily positioned in third place in the table and they have played fewer games than the teams above them – Barrow Celtic and Hawcoat Park.

Fresh from a 7-2 thrashing of a decent Bootle side in the Terry Clinton Memorial Cup victory – when Matty Bruce notched a hat-trick – Kirkby will be in confident mood ahead of tomorrow’s Premier Division trip to Swarthmoor Social reserves. And with struggling Swarthmoor having shipped 10 in their cup defeat to Croftlands last week, they could be in for a long afternoon against Bruce and Co.

League leaders Celtic are in Furness Senior Cup action against Britannia, so victory for Kirkby will put them level on points with the Hoops.

With Celtic not in league action, that also leaves the door open for Hawcoat Park reserves to take pole position, should they beat Walney Island seconds.

There are some tasty Senior Cup ties taking place. Askam United first team are at home to Bootle, free-scoring Croftlands Park host Swarthmoor firsts, unbeaten Coniston head to Rampside Road to take on Furness Cavaliers reserves, and GSK Ulverston Rangers are hoping to put a difficult start to their West Lancs season to one side as they entertain Vickerstown CC reserves.

Holker Old Boys are also in cup action as they take on fellow NWC Division One mid-table outfit Silsden at Rakesmoor Lane in the Reusch Cup.

The Stags’ involvement in the Macron Cup ended abruptly with a 6-3 home defeat to Chadderton last time out, so they will be looking for a much-improved performance.

Hawcoat Park are aiming to put down a marker in the West Lancs League Division One title race by completing an early-season double over leaders Poulton.

Third-placed Park beat Poulton 1-0 at home a few weeks back thanks to an Ollie Jackson strike, and if the Maroons can do it again tomorrow, they will go top, as second-placed CMB have no game.

Dalton United need points for a very different reason as they lock horns with Haslingden St Mary’s at Railway Meadow. United are third-bottom but three points would help drag themselves closer to mid-table.

In the Premier Division, both local sides are at home, as Crooklands Casuals entertain Garstang and Vickerstown look to cause a big upset by beating leaders Longridge Town at Park Vale.
