CONISTON came through the lottery of a penalty shootout to advance against Furness Cavaliers reserves in the Furness Senior Cup.

The in-form Lake District side and their hosts had little in the way of goalmouth action to report in a tightly-contested first 45 minutes.

The best efforts were speculative ones from the visitors, which home keeper Kieran Roberts dealt with comfortably.

The game needed a goal and, in the first minute of the second half, it got just that after James McGoldrick hit a screamer from all of 40 yards which caught the Coniston keeper off guard.

As the half wore on, the Cavaliers players tired under the constant pressure from Coniston and, with 15 minutes remaining, the away side claimed their just rewards as Phil Edmondson latched on to a though ball to level the tie.

Coniston finished strongly, but after 90 minutes the game finished 1-1 and went straight to penalties.

The first nine spot-kicks were all put away with little drama before Cavaliers’ Jamie Wright smashed the 10th against the bar as Coniston won 5-4.
